Woodrow Wilson was the last team from San Francisco AAA to win the TOC championship in 1968 with big Ansley Truitt #43. Other TOC champions from the City included: Lowell ('47), Lincoln ('48), St. Ignatius ('54 & '55), and Poly ('57).
Ansley Hoover Truitt Jr. was a legendary American professional basketball player known for his incredible skills and contributions to the sport. Born on August 24, 1950, Truitt's journey in basketball began at the prestigious California Golden Bears, where he showcased his exceptional talent. In 1972, he was honored as a first-team all-conference selection in the Pac-8 (now known as the Pac-12), solidifying his status as one of the best players of his time. Truitt's prowess on the court didn't go unnoticed, and he was drafted by the New York Knicks in the third round of the 1972 NBA draft. However, it was in the American Basketball Association (ABA) where Truitt made his mark, playing for the Dallas Chaparrals during the 1972-1973 season. His exceptional skills and dedication to the game earned him a place among the basketball legends of his era. Tragically, on February 13, 2021, Truitt passed away due to complications from COVID-19 at the age of 70. His untimely departure left a void in the basketball community, and he will always be remembered for his remarkable contributions to the sport. Ansley Truitt is survived by his loving wife, Mary, and their three daughters, Najah, Nikita, and Alanna. His legacy as a basketball icon will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. Ansley Truitt, a former All-Pac-8 Conference player who remains Cal’s No. 2 all-time rebounder nearly 50 years after his career with the Golden Bears ended, died Feb. 13 due to complications from COVID-19. He was 70.
“He had an excellent touch for a big man facing the basket and he jumped out of the gym,” said his former Cal teammate, Phil Chenier, who went on to 10 seasons in the NBA.
